If I have to fill my own soda, then I’m taking a refill

July 15, 2006

There are few things on earth that have as high of a markup as a cup of fountain soda, but the pricing scheme is still widely accepted by the general public. Most places you go will perform the service of filling the cup for you, but some places don’t. I don’t mind filling my soda, as it allows me to customize my soda:ice ratio, but I hate those “No refills” signs. If you choose to delegate the right to dispense the soda, then you have given up your right to control the refills. I encourage everyone to exercise this policy. If I didn’t live in New Jersey, I’d also consider extending this rule to gas pumps.
