Softened butter is a double-edged sword

Few things in life are more annoying than mutilating your dinner roll in an attempt to smear a rock-hard pad of butter onto it.  On the other hand, thrusting your knife into a surprisingly soft piece of butter is both delightful and unsettling as you ponder exactly how long that butter has gone without refrigeration.
