Turbo doesn’t mean fast

January 15, 2007

Most people consider the word “turbo” to mean fast.  However, if you look it up in the dictionary, you will find no mention of speed.  Perhaps people would discontinue associating it with a false meaning if advertisers would stop incorrectly using this term.

The next time you purchase a product with the word “turbo” in the name (such as TurboTax software or a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo razor), check to see if that item has some sort of an exhaust system that drives a turbine employed to increase the pressure of the air in its intake chamber during the combustion cycle.  If it doesn’t, then you’ve been ripped off.

  1. Although I see the humor in suggesting that turbo products should have “some sort of exhaust system that drives a turbine..,” I am more inclined to think that in the case of the Gillette Mach 3 Turbo, that this implies that I should be able to decrease the amount of time shaving by using the Turbo product, as opposed to using the standard Mach 3.

    • I understand that’s what they were implying, however they are using the word improperly. Check the dictionary.

  2. I don’t think you do understand what they are implying. They do not in any way, shape, or form, imply that using a Mach 3 Turbo will make you shave faster. In reality, the device is supposed to simply give you a closer shave than the standard Mach 3 or competitors products. I do, however, agree with you in that the marketing folks are completed off track with their choice of product names. I wonder how the Mach 3 Turbo compares to the Fusion Power?…hmm.
